One of the problems of using wood for outdoor furniture is that
it would normally rot because of the constant threat of rain. If not that, wood also has a tendency to fade when
exposed to the sun for long periods of time, making it seem really impractical to use patio outdoor furniture made out of wood. But it's not entirely impossible to use patio
furniture made out of wood because it's a matter of using the right kind of wood. So if you really want to use
wooden furniture outdoors, go for teak outdoor
furniture.
Using teak for furniture
Teak outdoor furniture is very ideal because it sits well in
various weather conditions. It won't rot even with constant exposure to rain and other water sources because it has
protective oils. These protective oils sealed within the wood actually seep out over the first few times your teak
outdoor chairs are exposed to the rain.
As such, make sure that your teak outdoor furniture is
completely dry before putting back the chair cushions. Take note that your chair cushions are usually not water-proof so while teak may last even in days of rain, your
chair cushions may not as they will be completely soaked through. If you see oncoming rain, make sure that you
remove all your cushions from your patio furniture to keep them from getting wet.
As for the color of wood, teak has a natural soft brown tone that
is easy to love. However, when it comes to color, teak may just be like other types of wood in that it will fade
over time unless you use a special wood sealant to prevent the natural oils from escaping the
wood.
Fading in teak though is not a big problem because most people
actually want their teak furniture to fade. Why? This is because teak weathers to a silvery, grey color that
is very beautiful. To achieve this perfect silvery shade, just leave the teak to weather on its own. The weathering
process may vary in length though, stretching between three to nine months, depending on how much of a beating it
gets from the environment.
While teak makes for excellent furniture for outdoor use, you can
also use pieces of teak outdoor furniture indoors. After all, if it can survive the elements outside, then surely
it will make for sturdy furniture indoors. This might be a good idea for those who love its natural soft brown
colors. This is a great way to keep the wood's color intact without the use of special sealants.
Taking care of your teak outdoor furniture
Since it's ok to let teak outdoor furniture naturally weather,
taking care of your furniture outdoors is a breeze. If it's not actually soiled, you can actually leave it on its
own and let the elements do their work. If it does get soiled though, clean up is a breeze because you will only
need a soft brush and a bucket of soapy water. For serious stains like red wine, just use the special teak
cleansers available in the market today.
